Mayfield Small, as a child he developed a desire to sing. As he grew he began to write songs that little or no one heard other than himself. It was only when he met the late Raymond Raspberry that fruition of his dream would emerge. Mayfield sang with Raymond and traveled the USA.
Mayfield Small has written many songs which have been performed and recorded by many artists. His biggest hit was That’s Alright With Me recorded on Kudu Records by Esther Phillips. The song was later sampled by artists such as Mobb Deep, Jeru the Damaja, Funkmaster Flex, Faith Evans, and J Cole on his CD as St. Tropez. The song has also been performed in an original motion picture “Entourage” featuring Mobb Deep. He recorded on Buddah Records “Don’t Rock The Boat” produced by Van McCoy and Joe Cobb. He has also recorded on Avco Embassy
Mayfield later formed his own group Mayfield Small & Company which would later visit some of the same cities, towns and venues paved by his experiences with Raymond Raspberry. Mayfield continued to sing and write material that would later be recorded by the late great Esther Phillips and Peggy Weston. He enjoyed backing up Roberta Flack at Howard University and playing “Oh Happy Day” for the late Della Reese; Mayfield has traveled extensively across the waters to: Europe (, , Switzerland, Belgium, Azores and Portugal), Greenland, Lagos Nigeria, West Africa, Barbados, WI and many islands in the Eastern Caribbean.
