Through the 70's disco era into the late 80's Italy were still making music in the genre of Italo Disco. As 90's dance music was being born across Europe, Italian dance music verged into multiple subgenres, Italo Dance being an Italian staple, sometimes abreviated simply to Italo, but as Euro Dance moved to the west, Eurobeat was also being created and was a smash hit in the east.
In 1990 the shortlived Italian series Super Eurobeat was picked up by a Japanese label called Avex Trax and since volume 9 Super Eurobeat continued under the Japanese label and Eurobeat was solidified as a genre that was popularised almost exclusively in Japan. The series continued under the new label in 1990 from volume 10 and in 1994 the original volumes 1-9 were rereleased under Avex Trax.
Eurobeat is an extension of Italo Disco with fast tempo of around 150bpm and is made almost exclusively by Italian artists, with some exceptions. It's fun, fast paced, bouncy, cheery and often cheesy, but is also a genre that rocks hard and has lasted for almost 30 years. Super Eurobeat holds the record for the longest running CD series in the world hosting well over 1500 original tracks and various mix sessions, and is still going today with over 250 main series releases not including side releases including independent artists, mini series and even companies such as Disney.
For any fan and collector of European Dance music, Super Eurobeat is an overlooked series with many hidden gems from some of Italy's best award winning dance artists, and as such a fan I reccomend Super Eurobeat to anyone looking to find hidden gems and expand their collection , because while some might not like all the music, there is absolutely lots of gold to be found if you give it a chance. -
Edited 11 years agoEurobeat, the italian has very sucessful in attempt to save that near-dying EDM genre by enhanced this genre more happy, speedy, melodic than ever and exclusive for only in Japan market.
Eurobeat may be less-known for most EDM listeners (outside Japan!?),but for anyone who obsessed, love Japan also manga, anime (through anime Intial D is a example) will know Eurobeat....as it has connection with J-pop dance music.
"Super Eurobeat" is still stand loyal to Japan market
You may find this genre is cheesy as happy hardcore, too speed up,too happy (both two genre share some similarity)
but i expect some very-well made eurobeat tracks by italian producers such as "Gun Boy" "Speed of Light" "Speedway" "I wanna dance"....
most eurobeat tracks seem follow a fixed, similar formula (kick drum, especially, the unique Riff, chord)
