Café Bohemia
Profile: |
The Café Bohemia was a jazz club located at 15 Barrow Street in Greenwich Village, New York City originally seating about 100. Originally known as the Pied Piper and open by about 1944 as a dixieland and swing venue, although Lennie Tristano is known to have performed their in 1947. The club was taken over Jimmy Garofolo in 1949 who did not follow a jazz-favoring booking policy until the end of May 1955 around the time the club was relaunched as the Café Bohemia. Oscar Pettiford was the musical director for a time (followed by George Wallington) and Julian "Cannonball" Adderley made his (unintended) New York debut there in June. The original club closed as a jazz venue in 1960. In October 2019, Café Bohemia re-emerged with a live music policy in the same location, but closed again in 2023. |
