Kant Kino

Profile:

One of the oldest cinemas in Charlottenburg, Berlin, that is still showing films today.
First located in a storefront it opened in 1905 at Kantstrasse 54 before it moved to the area behind the main building (then a hotel until at least 1943) in 1912. The cinema back then had a capacity of more than 800 people.
In 1929 the prior hotel lobby was remodelled into the lobby of the cinema allowing an direct entry to the cinema from the street. The cinema was remodelled again in 1956 reduicing the capacity to about 350 seats.
Between 1975 and 1983 the cinema was also used for live concerts by its then owner / curator Conny Konzack for alternative music, rock, punk, new wave and NDW.
More than 300 concerts of local and international bands took place in the mostly packed venue.
In 1988 and 1997 additional space was used to build additional smaller cinemas.
The cinema closed briefly between October 2001 and January 2002 when it was taken over, renovated and renamed "Neue Kant Kinos" until 2009, when the original name was used again.
