Threshold Archives

Profile:

Threshold Archives began as a project by Peter Christopherson in 2006. At the time, Peter was involved in many projects that consumed much of his time including Soisong, a re-launched Throbbing Gristle, and The Threshold HouseBoys Choir, in addition to assembling the final Coil album, The New Backwards, and the massive Colour Sound Oblivion box. With the age of time, intercontinental moves, and record label bankruptcies, many master recordings and artworks were lost, damaged, or degrading.
At the time of his ing in 2010, Peter had only begun to assemble artwork for Threshold Archives releases, but no project was completed. The music was scattered across numerous sources, including DATs, cassettes, Betamax masters, reels, and old computer hard disks with long-outdated and incompatible operating systems. Peter didn’t have time to sort through and identify it all, so he sought help. Discussions and agreements were reached and the blueprints of Threshold Archives were made.
Through the efforts of former Coil , friends, and family, these collections are finally materializing. The quality of these recordings varies greatly, as does the artwork that was available. Additionally, many previously unreleased songs have no titles available. Coil was Geff (John Balance) and Peter (Sleazy), who presented Coil as a complete experience; song choices, mix, order, cover artwork, layout, live visuals, costumes, guests, etc. Without Balance and Sleaz, there is no official Coil release nor will there ever be again. Nothing that bears the word “Coil” is authorized, official, or sanctioned by Coil, as Coil has ceased to exist.

Illegitimate repressings by Jon Whitney of Brainwashed, made for a quick buck. Deeply dishonorable.

I own every single one of these and they are INDISPENSABLE owning if you are a Coil fan on any level. Essential listening and so wonderful to have out amongst us.

One well known independent russian label made an offer to Jon Whitney to do a reissue of all 16 discs from this series, he declined that offer.

I'm honestly borderline livid over the 8 works being available for only two weeks in a handful of places with the plug being pulled with a vague, cryptic and months later still non-updated post to the Brainwashed website on the pending status of their and all other Coil re-issues. Why a test run with the releases actually being available from lower status vendors in October when all the big commercial vendors had the releases slated for November 2015 which made the brief availability a near secret? The stated goal of Threshold Archives was to make all Coil readily available and affordable once and for all and despite their stated protest cautioning to not pay scalpers and opportunists they gave that lot, who were undoubtedly counting on something like this to happen, an ultimate payday with a few of these going for as much as $200 per CD. At least a bit disrespectful to the memories of Christopherson and Balance, especially if they don't give an update very soon as to when we can truly expect the releases to come and halt the greedy desecration currently being done by the vultures' secondhand transactions.

Does anyone know what is going on with Threshold Archives? The 8 COIL cd's came and went, who knows what the real story is? I have searched for answers and have come up with nothing.

I love music and I still buy physical releases a lot. I love and adore major parts of Coil's music. Unfortunately I didn't get the chance to buy the 8 CDs when they came out a few weeks back. And now those gnomes asking $50 a copy while they paid like $10-14, how lame is that? Is there anybody out there willing to sell copies at a reasonable price?

Can't wait for the next round on Black Friday RSD ( at least that's what I've heard) !!! An expanded 2CD Astral Disaster, The Restitution of Decayed Intellegence for the first time on CD, a disc of Soundtrack work, Is Suicide a Solution? + demos, Nasa-Arab + more.........PLUS a re-release of The Moon's Milk Bonus Disc with an extra track from the sessions!!!!!!!! Can't if that is all but seems to me that there were going to be 2, 2CD SETS (AD being one of them)...so I think there may be one or 2 more in this next batch!

I just wish I could what record store's website I saw this info on....can't find it now for the life of me. So bring on the comments that I'm full of crap, but you'll see soon....

Finally listened to all of them. The music is fantastic. Packaging could be better of course; well, at least we have original artwork, but liner notes, some photos etc wouldn't hurt. Maybe second pressing will be better. We'll see. For now I'm glad to have "something" (8 hours of Coil to listen to!) and hope to see more in the near future.
