Elvis Presley – The Elvis Presley Sun Collection

Although it almost certainly comes from a digital master, this is a big improvement over the 70’s compilations and sounds better to my ears than the 2017 A Boy From Tupelo LP. It cuts back on the excessive reverb, the pressing is quieter and it includes a second record of alternate takes that I doubt anyone will listen to for a second time but justifies the “Complete” in the title. And Guralnick’s notes are top notch.

Magnificent sounding edition of Elvis’s Sun recordings, and beautifully pressed. This was the first official attempt to bring all of these tracks together, and it’s mercifully devoid of the reverb that RCA had added to its previous issues of some of these songs. Later versions would add one or two additional tracks, but the clarity of the sound on this still takes some beating.

Mono, yes. Bathed in reverb at times, yes. Choose your battles wisely. The occasional cavernous echo is better than reprocessed stereo, and this compilation contains the essential early Elvis, THE SUN SESSIONS (though not complete), before RCA turned him into an automaton and the military sucked the soul out of him. You may disagree. Other than the aforementioned tweaks, this pressing sounds mighty fine, big and pumping with the bass, crisp and clear with the percussion and guitars, rich and robust with the soundstage. My copy plays bereft of extraneous surface noises, nice and clean, with audible reverberations.

Incredible pressing. Loud and balanced and full of life. I don't even like Elvis and I like this record.

I have the identical cassette (though no card sleeve) as this and notice that the track listings do not match those in the photograph. The total number of tracks actually printed on the cassette is 10 for Side A and 10 for Side B. Here these listings show16 for Side A and 15 for Side B.

This record sounds amazing. Better than my 79 UK “The Sun Collection”, better than the cuts from My 1963 US “Elvis Presley”. Less hash, more detail.

The 1987 release should have it's own different and separate entry. Yes, all the songs on the earlier release are on the 1987 release but so what? There are later Elvis releases that contain every song from his first album. Are those compilations listed alongside Elvis Presley (1956)? Of course not and they shouldn't be. Is Sunrise (1999) listed here with the earlier 1976 and 1987 releases? No and it shouldn't be. Yet all the songs on here are on Sunrise, so if Discogs were consistent then they all should be together. It's silly and illogical to lump the 1976 and 1987 releases together.

Yeah ... this sounds great .... inexpensive, quality option. Pick it up if you can!

One of the finest compilation LPs since the dawn of recorded music. Essential for any music lover. A release that puts perspective into why Elvis was just SO damn important.
