Roy Haynes – Question And Answer

A very delicate souding record with much dymanics. Roy Haynes is on fire on this one!

Since 1977, Pat Metheny has been closely associated with pianist Lyle Mays, who collaborated on so many of his most important albums.

Released in 1990, Pat returns to guitar trio format for the first time since his debut album. With Dave Holland on bass and the legendary Roy Haynes on drums, this album is loose, experimental, and free, just as you might hear at a club gig.

Lovely arrangements, including a beautiful Ornette Coleman piece, "Law Years". Highlights are "Solar", "All The Things You Are", and "Old Folks", in which Pat blows through the ballad in double time feel, yet with a delicate touch. Haynes tears it up on "H&H" with a great solo and some vigorous trading.

The instruments are tracked cleanly and beautifully mixed. Pat's tone is quite dark, almost in the realm of "Rejoicing". Drums have nice sparkle on the ride cymbal and stick hits. Overall, It is a very pleasant listen. Great pressing.

For me one of the top Pat’s albums. Great « conversations «  between Pat guitar, the bas and the drums. Fantastic sound quality in that pressing.

This is a very unusual LP for Pat Metheny, as he breaks away from his regular jazz/rock group of the time to play with the invariably brilliant bassist, Dave Holland, and old-school drummer, Roy Haynes. I love Metheny's rockier recordings, but it's good to hear him in mellow mood on the standards "All The Things You Are" and "Old Folks." There are some interesting Metheny originals too, but the presence of Haynes appears to make the ace guitarist play a little differently than normal.

Great quartet. One of the first modern jazz records I ve listened in my life. My life changed after this....Roy Haynes here is so pure.

Amazing journey of gentle lines, beats, bass and interplay. Fun, serious, haunting and comforting. A really quality record to go back to again and again.
