The Sound (2) – Jeopardy

Plays rather quiet, but you can always crank it up. Sounds great. Crisp, with a great soundstage. Vinyl is flat and played nice and quiet. Great reissue.

Who sold me was sure it was not a bootleg and I paid it like an original one's copy in those years before their catalogue was repressed. Original one that I had and lost somewhere or sold to someone I can't remeber.
But I very well how the first record of The Sound sounds good, and also this release seemed to me too well done to be an unofficial one..
The cover instead it's just too dark respect to that printed by Korova (1) in 1980

When trying to decide what the best post punk band is I usually end up with Joy Division, Siouxsie, Chameleons, Comsat Angels, Echo and the Bunnymen and the usual mainstays.

But The Sound tops all of them for their first 2 albums. Jeopardy and From The Lion’s Mouth are not only vastly different albums, but also masterpieces of the genre.

Adrian Borland was the GOAT.

No regrets on purchasing this fab sounding record. This pressing is excellent.

The track listing on the sleeve does not correspond to the track sequence on the vinyl.
'Heyday' is A.6, 'Jeopardy' is B.1 etc.
The labels on the vinyl are laid out terribly, and repeat the incorrect track sequencing.

Packaging on these standalone reissues is square which matches well with the recent Statik boxset, and of course it stays true to the original artwork (but it also must be mentioned that this is NOT a mini-LP replica). Why don't more albums have inner sleeve in addition to outer sleeve like this? Makes things so much easier. It is very barebones though. No info about remastering credits or even the release date (hint: actual release date is January 10, 2025, not 2024).

And I assume it is remastered since the vinyl is remastered as well. It is hard to judge the sound (ahem) of this CD given the album's low production values and probably sourced from a needledrop, but at least I didn't hear ticks or pops or anything, so that is good. I only wish it was a bit louder so I don't have to turn the volume way up. Many CDs today are too loud so I avoid them, but these CD reissues are too quiet. That said, I much prefer too quiet over too loud.

Normally I would not buy a CD sourced from a vinyl needledrop but I lost hope with this album. And besides, how often does a reissue of something by The Sound come? This album was never even released on CD until 2001! Not many chances we will have. Imagine my shock last week walking into a record store in a shopping mall full of US-owned chain stores in a soulless, post-war, suburb of Toronto and randomly finding brand new CD copies of The Sound's first three albums sitting on the shelf. Crazy. Not something I could have even imagined, but somehow it happened. I never have even seen Joy Division in the stores around here, but somehow I have seen The Sound. It gives me faint hope that The Sound and Adrian Borland will one day finally get the attention and recognition that they deserve.

Owwwwwwww the treble on this remaster is fucking bonkers. I have a headache from side one alone. The fidelity of the transfer is wonderful, but it's rendered nearly unlistenable.

Was jacking up the top end meant to offset the sibilance in the vocals? Because it didn't work, and my hope for a definitive digital version of this album has been dashed, yet again. I was looking forward to a version of Missiles without the wretched inner groove distortion, but I guess that'll never come to fruition.

Amazing pressing for an amazing album. I can’t recommended this lp enough.
