The vinyl and CD versions are extremely different. In 1984, Zappa enlisted Arthur Barrow and Chad Wackerman to re-record the original bass and drum parts (although they were not credited) for the "Old Masters Box One" re-issue of the album. In addition to the new drums and bass, Zappa added several vocal overdubs and heavily remixed the album.
The remix of "Cruising with Ruben & the Jets" was the only version of the album available from 1984 until 2010, when "Greasy Love Songs" was released on CD. Greasy Love Songs contains the original mix/recording, but CD reissues under the "Cruising With Ruben & The Jets" title continue to be the 1984/1987 version. Recent vinyl reissues (2016 and later) however contain the original recording/mix.
Some copies of this release may have the mono number, V 5055 showing at the front bottom left. This album was not released in mono, except in the UK as VLP 9237, so the positional error in showing V 5055 is only a manufacturing error.

Edited 6 months agoI BELIEVE I have a single NON gatefold issue of this LP.I am not sure of what year.I seem to it being a USA Copy.I may have missed it in the listings here. -
Agree with galactix. I have a UK Music For Nations press release which states that the first four (Hot Rats, Freak Out, Uncle Meat & Ruben) "will be released on October 26th", that being presumably 1987. The 1985 copyright probably refers to/copied from the US Barking Pumpkin CD, which genuinely was released in 1985 (AFAIK).

Another underrated Zappa gem thats finally remastered beautifully. Hard to believe that this recording is 45 years old, it sounds so fresh! It seems that I also have an unofficial version of this album that sounds really decent but this one seems to come from a different galaxy. Orginal drum and bass takes! Cracking job Zappa Trust! Looking forward to the two other gems Waka/Jawaka and Wazoo. -
Edited 2 years agoI have this, I didn't know this music before, the all-over sound is great, but the drums sound weird, reverbed, like a whiplash. The streaming versions sound more organic, total different, but I have no other comparison. How can I be sure which is the remixed version, where FZ added new bass and drum tracks?

To add to previous comments, which I agree entirely. I would grab all Frank Zappa reissues as the standard for excellent value of the dollar. They sound fantastic. I played this and Uncle Meat for a friend, he could not believe what he was hearing. If you are new to Frank Zappa, this may not be the starting point. Many have different opinions where to start. I always start at the beginning. -
I guess I'm one of those weirdos who actually likes Zappa's one and only fully doo-wop album. It has the best version of How Could I Be Such A Fool, after all. Everything else is ironically schmaltzy in the most perfect way. The only track I don't feel so hot about is the version of Anyway The Wind Blows, which isn't nearly as good as the poppier original. -
Nice sounding record, better than my 1st press 68 US issue. Recommended
