Edited 3 months agoObviously; I am not the only one who was surprised, after ordering 'Ptha The El Daoud' for a moderate price. A new reRelease, and yep sounding not bad, but also must it never heard any contemporary pressing. It may sound digitally filtered. Also I can't compare this edition to the new official 2022' rerelease from Verve Records, as I got the 2023 Verve Edition of 'Journey In Satchidananda'.
This edition got its nice Label graphics showing Alice with harp but really missing and with no excuse, is the gatefold designed art work for the album cover. The only identification is to find on the record itself as 'AS9196...'
I often prefer the analogue signal ways, the old sound, rich in frequencial variety, rich with audio artefacts.
... so this recording with its 'cleaned' sound and no gatefold stays an obscure release and I would be happier with an older pressing from the 70's or the new Verve 2022 release. -

I play one that’s VG+( closer to near mint ) and it’s sounds incredible!! It’s Quiet throughout. An OG press and a trophy piece! -
Edited 8 months agoWell, a worthy release as for me. The sound is great. There are some small distortions on piano here and there but nothing disturbing - I think the source isn’t in perfect condition nowadays. Otherwise sounds perfect - bold and wide.
The packaging is ok. The surface is mostly quiet - just a few occasional clicks on A1. Vinyl is quite dirty out of the sleeve, it has some dents and marks (hello, Third Man), but they are luckily not audible.
I have Audio Clarity version as well. The sound of Impulse release is certainly richer and the top end is more natural. -
I listened to this record/music for the first time last night and this version is glorious. My copy has none of the issues mentioned previously. The spindle hole was a bit tight but that’s it. The record still came off of the platter without too much difficulty. It is absolutely perfect and I’m so happy that this album has been reissued. Blue Nile is amazing and the highlight of the album for me . I’ve never heard the harp before in a jazz record. Looking forward to explore Alice’s other offerings after fully digesting this one.

Edited 8 months agoExcellent sound. Clear and detailed top end, deep bass, middle range sings. Precise soundstage, great instruments separation. Quiet surface, antistatic inner sleeve for the plate.
In direct comparison to Impulse reissue it loses in some ways - official release has a little bit richer sound and more natural top end.
Still this is a great release for a bootleg. -
Great copy sounds clear and warm enough.
Changed the inner sleeve and gave it a good wash now it’s shiny and silent. My copy is flat. Good. Instrument separation and clarity. In some parts some distortion and very minor crackling.

Picked up the standard Third Man reissue, back to back the Third man is a more pleasent listen, more present bass and generally a bit mellower in the high mids which suits me. But I would say the difference is minimal so don't feel the need to upgrade if you're enjoying your current copy!
