Edited 2 years agoThe electric blue splatter version is a disaster — I tried multiple copies but they were full of surface noise, ticks, and pops despite a through cleaning. The black version is only moderately better. No major surface noise issues, but still plenty of distracting ticks and pops.
I’ve bought a few other Mondo releases over the years and my experience is always the same. They focus on fancy packaging and trendy colored vinyl, with little care given to the quality of the pressing. Given the string of disappointments, I won’t be buying anything further vinyl from Mondo.
Fingers crossed that another label picks up the rights and gives us the audiophile quality pressing this deserves. -
Mirroring what most everyone else has said, the packaging is top notch and the records themselves are a sight to behold, but these are for collecting only. I had two copies, both were drowning in surface noise and scattered ticks/pops. The noise didn’t get any better despite a second cleaning on my Okki Nokki.
I ended up giving up rather than trying an exchange for a third time.
I got the black pressing but it isn’t a whole lot better as there are plenty of distracting ticks/pops (and yeah, that’s after a cleaning, too).
This isn’t my first disappointment with crummy quality pressings from Mondo. Doubtful I’ll ever buy another record from them. Fingers crossed that another label with better credentials gives us a more audiophile caliber release at some point. -
On the first vinyl side A andB you do hear some pops and crackles but nothing to the point where it becomes unlistenable. only one song on side B George To The Rescue, Part 2 pops badly for a secound. SIde C and D plays almost perfect. I can see where some negative is given but its still listenable but just not perfect. I still enjoy playing this version but maybe I got a bit more lucky than most? I don't hear any back ground noise either.

I bought this record months ago, but had yet to listen to it. However, I stumbled upon this page and saw the outpouring of poor reviews for this pressing. I thought to myself "It can't be that bad can it?", assuming everyone here might be audiophile junkies.
I put my copy on for a spin and the whooshes and scrapes of the surface sound filled my room from wall to wall. Can confirm, they really messed this one up. Wish I had asked for a refund now. -
This is the score to my favorite movie of all-time, so naturally, acquiring this record is something I've always wanted to do. I received this recently as a Christmas gift from one of my best buds (Who does not buy/listen to records) and I couldn't have been more excited.
If I were to grade this based on the packaging and presentation, this pressing would get a 10/10 for me. It's one of the most beautiful album jacket/colored vinyl variants I've ever seen, they did justice to the film with the artwork and design choices. Looking at it on display gives me great joy, and so few score/soundtrack pressings ever come close to this.
Unfortunately, the look of records and jackets is only part of the vinyl experience, and the quality of these records are absolutely appalling. Even when reading up on how people felt about this release, I still thought there was a chance I would make out far better (probably wouldn't think that if it was not my favorite film score). Even after properly dusting, and cleaning the records, the pops, clicks and built in surface noise is some of the worst I've ever seen for such a major release like this. Some of the pops and snaps are so bad, I thought for a split second that my speakers were gonna get destroyed in the process (and not in a good way).
Very rarely does this record ever get to the point where the quality of it is listenable, but those moments are few and far between, and I'm left not even thinking about Alan Silvestri's brilliant score, but only about my record player making Rice Crispies. How is it that the 2020 Walmart release of the soundtrack album sounds better than this? I've never bought a Mondo vinyl release before, but considering how much they butchered this release, I'll never do buisness with them at all for the foreseeable future. I know that this release has been around now for nearly 5 years, but I wanted to still share my thoughts to help provide more (the more the merrier right?). Hopefully in the future we will get a proper release of this score that we can all jump for joy in it's sound quality since this movie deserves so much better. Until then, these splatter vinyl records will make lovely coasters for my drinks. -
I second all the negative comments. I have the same issues. What I find most irritating, to avoid the term shocking, Mondo still sells this pressing at a price like it's all roses and unicorns. I received my copy last Friday. Obviously I had never checked here on discogs regarding this release. The worst, Mondo refuses a full immediate refund. They offer 20% immediately or they demand that one ships the disc back for which they won't provide return shipping up front if you are an overseas customer. Way to lose a good customer...

As some have already written here, this is bad pressing. Maybe somebody was lucky, but I was not. However, it is worth saying that I have a release of the second part of "Back to the Future" of the same series and also in "Clear with Electric Blue Splatter" release. This second part sounds perfect. There is not that noise and crackling as in the first part. Also, I have the third part in black vinyl, and it sounds great too.
Probably it's not the color per se, but the problems with the master press of the first part of the trilogy. It is my opinion. But I have no information on black vinyl. Check it out. -
