The skip that the OP mentioned has most certainly nothing to do with the length of side 2...

Longer sides have audio consequences like lack of dynamics, lower volume, diminished bass (usually done by the cutting engineer) and, usually, some IGD at the end of the side.
At 30min, it is clearly long but not unseen. 17min or less seems a bit extreme as many +20min records have been released even by audiophile labels.

Now, what makes this side not so bad is the fact that it's ambient music with a small amount of deep-bass and almost no beat. This helped greatly to master this side without compromising too much on the dynamics.
All in all, put in good hands, a long side can still sounds good.

But, yes, i concur, we could have had these bonus tracks on a separate disc.
A bonus 12" would have been great not to f*ck with the original tracklist, especially with this crappy remix and it would have taken advantage of this rather ugly gatefold.

I guess this is what you were getting in the 90's...
No wonder Ryko lost the rights not long after!

This is a flawless* pressing. Sounds good, plays flat, is very quiet, and has some tracks which are exceedingly hard to find on vinyl and essential for deep Bowie fans, such as the superlative "Some Are." Love the Rykodisc gatefold photospread. Sounds vastly superior to an old RCA pressing I had.

*My copy has a skip with no visible cause in the early part of "Warszawa."
