It’s a beautiful picture disc. The art is amazing, but a little lacking for how much I paid for it. It’s also completely unplayable, but that’s on me for not knowing what a picture disc is before buying.
-
Reading the reviews you'd think this would score 1/5 but it sits at 4,55.
This album was sitting at my record store for 6 months and I was hesitant to pick it up after reading the reviews.
I finally did and well. It pops and cracks a bit, but nothing like the reviews state. It has surface noise on the quieter parts, but that's it.
If you want noiseless records buy CDs. -
If this ever gets a re-issue and remaster, I'll pick that copy up and throw this one on Ebay. The disks are pretty, but my least favorite album to listen to despite being one of my favorite albums. The other reviews are spot on. Loud, pops, hisses, and skips (especially at the beginning of schism).
-
Surface noise is loud as HELL, but once it gets going it sounds pretty good on my Kenwood KD-2070. It's noticable but it's not overly disruptive. Mastering is good but picture discs gonna picture disc.
-
Loud Surface Noise. Sounds pretty good actually. It’ll be hard for anything to sound bad on a AT PTG-33, so maybe I’m bias.

Edited one year agoA terrific album, but a mediocre pressing at best, due to the decision to manufacture this as a picture disc. As many others have stated, the crackles and soft pops are prevalent throughout; namely at the beginning of each side. Not to mention a few skips. This can’t happen in a Tool album! Using a static free brush helps a bit, but only just. It’s still great to listen to, as we have no other option, just be warned; the hissing is real!

Edited one year agoI disagree with some of the other reviewers. The album gets points for how pretty it is. The printing is very well done. However, the album is loud - very loud. Static on my album is noticeable even in louder parts of the songs (especially at the beginning of each side), even after a deep-clean. On top of this, it sounds somewhat normalized, like the loud parts of the album are squashed by compression. Really inexcusable to sacrifice any dynamic range on a tool album as the play between loud and soft is so important.
-
A fantastic, well-mastered album, but holy smokes: this pressing is loud and nasty. Persistent pops and crackles are audible during the quiet ages of all songs. Very disappointing.

Edited 2 years agoFor a picture disc sounds pretty good has some pops and crackles throughout but all in all a good sounding album of one of my favorite tool records
-
Riddled with static throughout the soft spots I'm hoping multiple playbacks will fix this some but when it's not quiet ages this sounds amazing.
