Edited one year agoAmazing album. I can see why King Crimson are the kings of prog rock. So many unique approaches and albums to check out. Red was a landmark in it's own way. To be balanced by Island just released a year away from it, is groundbreaking. Discipline is another level too in another way. I can see how Belew sort of merged a bit of funk into King Crimson from coming off his working with Talking Heads. Also the spoken verses reminds me of David Byrne. Anyways, his addition is a perfect balance for the re-invented and different direction to King Crimson. Belew's performance is powerful enough to balance Robert Fripp's input. And that balance is what produces the magic. You can clearly hear how this band would inspire later bands. I can hear a Primus, Alice and Chains and Rage against the machine in these track easily.
King Crimson kills Pink Floyd sorry. -
Edited one year agoGreat solo album by Adrian Belew with help from Fripp, Bruford and Levin!
... Balls! I'm joking! But Belew definitely dominates this album! As a "Talking Head"? I also hear a good dose of King Sunny Ade in parts! Great contributions by the other three make this fine piece of work a new prog wave monster in it's own way! (Followed by another two of a perfect pair in the same manner.) -
Edited 3 years agoGeorge Piros did US copies of this ... https://discogs.sitiodesbloquea.com/release/4673412-King-Crimson-Discipline which I think was RTI ... The 21 century copies are they independently made there is no indication of a pressing plant... Notice like history these albums from 1981 are disappearing .... It's a bit disturbing. I bought mine new for 3.99 I mean 3.99 same copy new is like 50.00 FIFTY DOLLARS... I thought I never lived to even see it ... One day they'll be GONE ...

If this were released by a new band, I'll accept the 'prog rock' description. But coming from King Crimson, I'd describe it as new wave jazz fusion!

Is matte kudasai on this LP the same Version that’s on the Japanese LP aka Alternative Mix in recent reissues?

Let's be honest; the group on this album is King Crimson in name only. It could equally be named Talking heads (ft. Fripp & Bruford). But that means it can only be good.
If I'm brutally honest with myself the classic line-up only went downhill after "Court". I expected big things for the follow-up "Poseidon" but it only left me indifferent (they even sang Catfood on Top of the Pops FFS).
People also rate Red highly (by another in-name-only incarnation); I didn't last ten minutes with it.
This album however has balls. It's one I can listen to repeatedly if only to completely (impossibly?) grasp all the interwoven guitar/chapmanstick magic that's going on. And then the voice of Adrian Belew offsets it all marvellously and turns the cacophony into bona-fide songs. It sounds new, it sounds fresh, it sounds different, it sounds prog! -
