I know you could say this about 99% of Zappa's records, but nobody could have written this album other than Frank Zappa himself. It is an amazing mix of different styles, the entire Joe's Garage maybe being his most eclectic album to date. This was one of my earliest Zappa albums I bought, and funny enough it was before I found a copy of Act I. I those years ago... it was weird, and silly, and strange, and it felt like it had a message (but one obscured under Zappa's singular sense of humour). But like most, once I heard Watermelon in Easter Hay, I knew I was listening to a genius of guitar and composition. I thought it was a pretty good intro to Zappa's music, even though he was taking on the slick production values of the late 70s and 80s, with echoey drums, slap bass, and clean production, and the latest in synthesizers. So while the production is a bit dated, this is an album that offers endless fun. Quite a few stand-out tracks that I rank with some of Zappa's best.
