Edited one month agoThis is the first time I've written a review. Simply because this one took my breath away. Louis and Ella are singing in my living room! It's a beautiful pressing. And at a knock down price. If you're hesitating, don't.

Only 3 stars. Both records have a manufacturing defect that includes curvature and noise at the peak of this wave. This noise is clearly audible on the first and second songs on all 4 sides. I would tear off the hands of whoever works there. Ultrasonic cleaning help only 30%. In short, money down the drain.

What a stunning disc!
Mine is among the quietest records I own. These Verve Acoustic Sound series discs have all hit it out of the park so far.
I need to remind myself the reason for a lot of the sibilance is Louis himself because he usually sang too close to the mic. ( I forget if it is on this disc or the other E&L disc that is mentioned in the liner notes)
Next up for me with this series is Nina Simone and if this is anything to go on, it will be wonderful. -
Edited one year agoFirst copy had defects in the vinyl near the run-out. Replacement copy is better, although it came with three large scratches on it that tick and pop. I don't know if I should just put up with it or try to return it again. It sounded better after a deep clean, but still quite noisy. Big disappointment.

Now this is what vinyl is all about. Mind blowing mastering with silent glossy records. Worth every cent.
-
Exceptional release. The sound is fantastic, thick beautiful gatefold, antistatic inner sleeves, dead quiet surface. Absolute must have.

I absolutely love this vinyl. The pressing is amazing! I used to have their first album digitally and have been in the hunt for it. However, this one is just as good and does not disappoint.

Edited 2 years agoBeautiful record! Little to no surface noise on my copy. Vocals come through pretty high on my system (ATLP120 w/ Grado Prestige Gold) resulting in often harsh sibilance, but the instruments and arrangements sound clear. Feels like you’re up close in the recording session with Ella and Louis. Some classics, deeper cuts and stunning interplay between them. A must-have in your collection!

Beautiful sound and a perfect pressing for such a fun album. I’ve always liked Ella & Louis but it I’m not a “deep cuts” fan of the duo’s work. This has several songs everyone will recognize, including some pretty funny and probably adlibbed lyrics from Louis Armstrong on Let's Do It (Let's Fall in Love). A pleasure to listen to from beginning to end.
My setup: Technics SL-1500C (Ortofon Blue cartridge), Pro-Ject Tube Box S2, Yamaha A-S801, Wharfedale Linton Speakers -
