Edited 2 years agoExcellent collection of tracks as I’m sure you can see above ⬆️⬆️⬆️.
Two things. It’s small. When I first saw this was coming out as a boxset, I’d kinda hoped for some kind of 7” sized box with a hardback book + the content. Or something akin to the Bowie Conversation Piece/Divine Symmetry What we’ve got is a CD sized card slipcase with the individual “albums” each packaged in single card sleeve. No inner sleeves, just a card cover. It’s not unattractive, far from it. But part of me still thinks such a great album in the Lips’ history should be given a bit more special treatment.
The other point I’d like to raise is SQ. I’m sure we all know that it’s been quoted somewhere that heavily compressed audio is an artistic choice for the band. They apparently like that grungy, dense sound. I’m not a huge fan of that, and would be very keen to hear a version of Yoshimi with a more “safer” mastering. Just to compare. It might sound pants. But I’m not too sure that the squashed up character of the music adds to it. It’s almost like painting a beautiful mind-blowing painting- a stunning landscape - and then sticking it in the cheapest frame you can get.
I’m not sure if the main album has been remastered. It still sounds very harsh in places.
This continues with the other disks as well. I wish I’d written this down, but I was playing one of the sessions disks a few weeks ago, and the compression was so intense, a particular high frequency squeal that came on in that particular moment, it almost shattered my teeth 🤣. I have visions of them all sitting at the mixing desk, smashed out of their heads, and all the channels pushed up into the red !!!!
Oh well. Saying all that, there’s a lot of good stuff on here. I particularly enjoyed the disk which is made up of the 2 e.ps. That flows really well and has some strong songs.
I got mine for £35 which is a bargain really. Just bear in mind the size of the thing and the audio quality. -
Edited 2 years agoHas pretty much everything from the era - besides, unfortunately, the excellent live radio session track Yoshimi Becomes a Pink Robot, recorded once only for the BBC, and the rarities on the One More Robot compilation, plus the 5.1 audio mix.
