I really like this box set. It’s got most of the songs from the singles and I have a much greater appreciation for the studio album after listening to the demos, alternates, and live versions. The variation keeps the music fresh. Packaging is good, the vinyl is quiet and well mastered by the legend Chris Bellman. One of the discs had a slight warp but nothing to get worked up about.

Edited one year agoThis is my favorite Flaming Lips album and I was struggling to find the non boxset version. I ended up trading for this set. The main album sounds great. Five stars for that. I find the extras pretty non-essential. Fun for a listen, but prob not something Ill revisit. The demos+ was especially silly. Kinda cool to hear the songs as formed but man side 4/track 2s “Do you realize” literally sounds like one of those “without auto tune” memes. I LOLed. Track 3 was every bit its equal. Like equal parts the song you love and a silly joke. The third cover of kylie’s “Cant Get You out of my head” also made me wonder if 1 might have been enough… but then it came on for a fourth time on the last disc. Anyways the album is essential and presentation (Booklet is kinda cool but should have the lyrics I think) is nice here… but this is solidly 75% filler after disc 1. Id give it 3 stars but that just seems wrong as its a great pressing of one of the best albums of the last several decades. 5 for the album, 2 for the extras. +1 if you are into completionism!

For the price, this is the near-platonic ideal of a box set. 5 Discs for under 100$?! Lots of cool outtakes, live versions, and such. Side 7 for me has one small pressing blip, but otherwise everything sounds great after a good cleaning. Love it.

Edited one year agoIncedibly exciting to have If I Go Mad (Funeral In My Head) and Up Above The Daily Hum on LP - these classics have never before appeared in their full uncompressed glory. (Could someone please confirm they are the studio versions?)
IMO there are notable omissions in this supposedly "complete package" - why 2 demos of Sunship Balloons and no studio version? A better product would have put the first three tracks of the Ego Tripping EP together as they form a suite of sorts... HOW did they leave out I'm A Fly On A Sunbeam when it's more essential than 85% of these extras.
Here's a RSD idea I would jump on day one: a 2xLP release with just the album and every studio outtake. Wouldn't you buy that? So weird how they're all broken up on this release. -

Fantastic box set for the fans. The sound and pressing is absolutely phenomenal. I’d never heard this album with such fidelity.

Recieved mine today, gonna do a vinyl opening on YouTube, but it look like it's in perfect shape so far can't wait to listen to this!
-
For those that have a copy, could you please check your grooves to see if the main album is also pressed at Pallas like the 2019 press.

very pleased with the sound quality and pressing overall. although a few of the discs came warped (did not affect playback). no skips and little surface noise. was the first time listening to majority of the extra songs so it was a fun experience.
