Blue Note sessions led by Jackie McLean are enjoyable and adventurous, at times. This one moves along quite nicely, with just enough familiarity to hold the listener while exploring new territory. Little known (to me) Charles Tollliver brings everyone home with a more standard composition, “Truth” for the last track on the album. He also plays a nice trumpet throughout, and meshes well with Jackie. Rhythm section is tight and lively, plus Herbie Hancock has always been a favorite of mine. Honestly, none of the players disappoint. I’m sure they did other sessions/dates during this time period. Maybe that’s why “it’s time!” this record was recorded when it was!

Recently picked up a mono copy. This has been on my want list and Charles Tolliver is a personal favorite. Feel like I have to say Hancock, Cecil McBee and Roy Haynes are pure class too. “It’s Time” is a a great fusion of hard bop with avant-leanings. This is 1965 so people like Coltrane are already exploring structure, or the lack of it. It’s not overt but you can hear it. This album somewhat reminds me of Ornette’s Shape of Jazz to come for some strange reason but it’s 6 years later. I would not say it is as good but a solid session and a keeper.
