Six LPs of remixes might sound like cynical overkill, right? Maybe for another band, but Depeche Mode have worked with so many remarkable musicians and DJs that this collection is nothing short of mouthwatering. It gets the balance right (sorry) between the bread and butter 12" mixes of their early career and the more freeform reimaginings of the CD era, and implausibly ends up just as comprehensive as any singles collection - and twice as rewarding. Remixes 81-04 is a thrilling, specialist journey through the increasingly ancient history of western electronic dance music, where dark, compulsive songs and beats have space to breathe and grow and mutate.
