It's kind of amazing that they managed to get this released the way they wanted it to sound as most listeners just can't bear the distortion and but I argue that without "Psychocandy", we would never have had "Loveless".

Edited 2 years agoMakes me laugh when I see ‘I was expecting audiophool quality’ and such shite :) ffs…

Edited 3 years agoI've really liked the Jesus and Mary Chain for about 30 years. Darklands is my favorite album of theirs. I was wondering if anyone else has trouble listening to Psychocandy because it hurts their ears. I have listened to it on CD, streaming and on Vinyl. For reference absolutely no Sonic Youth album hurts my ears. I have never been averse. This is the only album that does it to me, wondering if anyone else has had that problem and perhaps a certain pressing that didn't hurt their ears. Thanks.

Not exactly an “audiophile” recording, but the older 80’s German pressing I have sounds much better than my 2006 Rhino copy.

Edited 4 years agosoaked and morphine drenched pop music. As bubblegum as it comes song-wise but packed in a subversive mound of sound and ironic lyrics. Genius band concept that stretched to a full and long career. In period belligerent attitudes saw short sets, riots at gigs and resulted in massive hype. Not since has a band 'played' the industry so well and retained a credible and achingly cool legacy. The fact that I can drop their tracks into deep underground house / club sets and literally tear the roof off a club says everything to me about the genius of their beautiful sound.
I salute you JAMC -
My copy of this is utterly ruined by a continuous wall of from beginning to end throughout the entire course of the album. This is the record I play (loudly) when I want to forget that I suffer from tinnitus. Inexplicably overrated once you factor out the massive hype that surrounded the Jesus and Mary chain at the time of this release.

Even today, more than 30 years after its release, the record has not lost its charm. It is authentic and fun to listen to from beginning to end.
Something strange is, that I didn't like it at that time. -
