I'm not an expert nor an avid fan of trip-hop, but this classic is really one of a kind. The dark guitars, the industrial arrangements, the excellent voices and the drums create a superb atmosphere throughout the whole listening.
I really like the slow and reversed beats of "Angel". The bass at the beginning sounds quite threatening, at the opposite of the title's name. However, the vocals of Horace Andy set the record straight and the electric guitars rocking at 3:38 onwards is where heaven begins.
The "dream on" lyrics in "Risingson" are very hypnotizing and soothing. The industrial loops starting at around 2:35 reminds me of Portishead.
In "Teardrop", the atmosphere belongs to beautiful melancholy. It's funny to think that this song was originally planned to feature Madonna's vocals.
The rhythm of "Inertia Creeps" has a strong çiftetelli influence, inspired by nights out in Istanbul. With the dark instrumentals, it surely sounds good.
Next, "Exchange" brings some positive vibes unlike most of the album. The kind of song to listen to on the beach or in a garden.
The bass sounds of "Dissolved Girl" won't be out of place in a Chemical Brothers production.
"Man Next Door" has stronger beats than most of the other songs. The guitars sounds are quite similar to those that U.N.K.L.E. (the electronic duo then composed of DJ Shadow and James Lavelle) used in their "Psyence Fiction" era.
"Black Milk" is my personal favorite tune. I don't know much songs that has such gorgeous vibes. The section starting around 2:50 featuring this pretty female "Ah" chorus is pure eargasm. The beats are also on point.
"Mezzanine" is also an amazing song. It also has these Portishead vibes. The loops heard around 3:10 reminds me of those used in the Crystal Method's choon "Over The Line".
Concerning "Group Four", it has one of the most haunting sounds I've ever heard starting 32-33 seconds after the beginning. It gives huge chills, and open the possibilities to a lot of dreams.
The last track "(Exchange)" is basically a reprise of the previous eponymous song. To be honest, I don't think this one is indispensable in this tracklist but that's just me. It finishes this CD on a optimistic note after all these dark and industrial musical trips.
It is a reference in the world of music, and deservedly so. It's a proof of how good, prolific and diversified this genre was in the 20th century.
