Easily one of my favourite albums from the golden era. Unabashedly melodic, full of that unmistakable early 90s ambient techno/IDM/chillout sound -- this is music for the love of it, no pretentions, just pure quality.

Edited 3 years agoBefore Alter Ego, there was the Primitive Painter, and with their self-titled debut, they set themselves firmly in the mellower side of techno. The long notes on the intro of "Hope" soon give way to a subtle beat and an almost trance-like chord progression. "Disfigured Phantasy" has some tonal qualities that are very Black Dog Productions-esque, even if the track isn't as complex; similarly, "Levitation" has hints of Detroit, but it's "Psycho Kinesis" and "Click Song" that finally throw in the drums. The mellow hum of "Invisible Landscapes" is certainly pleasant, even if it doesn't have much teeth; much better is the melodics on "A Pagan Place." Indeed, "Orgon Akkumulator" shows that what they can do with a beat is much better than without.

Remarkable and often overlooked early IDM album by the german duo also releasing as Alter Ego and Acid Jesus.
Sounding like a forgotten part of the legendary "Artificial Intelligence" series on Warp or even a secret B12 release, it isn't hard to tell what might have inspired Flügel and Wuttke back in 1994 when they recorded this album. You can hear a lot of black dogs barking on this one for sure, and if you're not too afraid of black dogs (or maybe even like, keep and treasure them), i strongly suggest you give "The Primitive Painter" a try. This album breathes the spirit and innovation of IDM's glorious days with every beat and bleep.
Lovely!
