There´s a spelling error in the artwork credits of the album and the Stranger/A Day 12": It says "Dolls Detail from Teatro Contradino". But it´s actually Teatro Contadino (no "r"). There´s an actual Teatro Contadino in Italy that worked with dolls since the early 1970´s.

Edited one year agoUK 4AD pressing is delightful. My copy has multiple scuffs, hairlines and a scratch bought on Discogs as VG+, but the NM copy was out of my budget. If you were to purchase this lp, get this pressing for sure.
Bright, crisp and clear, from what I can make out. Good gain and production helps. -
Well, yet another pressing I can't find here... Sure is getting frustrating trying to catalog all my damn albums when I keep not finding the pressings I have. So, mine I believe is a 1st 1986 US pressing, but the label shows the number EMC-8037-1, and none of the other US pressings show the '-1' Also there is additional test on the label. Sure would be nice actually to be able to FIND the F'n pressing you are trying to add to your collection!

Edited one year agoBack in the day, I would just buy any second hand 4AD record that was $10 or less. Every time I play this I’m surprised at just how good it is. It has tonal shifts but maintains an overall darkness that never bogs down.
This was less-than-$10 well spent, particularly when you look at the prices now. -
I bought this Xymox' first album on the day of its release. I had no idea what it would sound like. It definitely was a surprise. It also gave me comfort during difficult times, reflecting my just-as-dark mood of that time. The brooding vocals touch on the acceptable side of despair better than most others.
It is all beautifully sung. Songs such as No Human Can Drown, Equal Ways and 7th Time are hypnotizing (ahhh! to have Anka's voice as a breeze-change).
This first album takes you into the Xymox heart . . . yes, you can drown in it.
[I think it is the only brown album cover I like.] -
Edited one year agoLooking carefully at my album, that's definitely a "TNT" in the Side A runout, not "THT". It kind of threw me for a second before I realized it must be a misreading.

Edited 3 years agoWith all the bands 4ad has been re-issuing, why are they avoiding the first 2 clan records - I mean wtf
-
A stone classic, start to finish, and beautifully recorded. Pieter, Anka, and Ronny created two of 4AD's most enduring albums: this and its follow up, Medusa - not counting Pieter's equally wonderful Sleeps With The Fishes. Here on their self-titled debut, Xymox establishes a layered, propulsive, romantic sound - darker than New Order, more poetic than Depeche Mode, almost as despairing as The Cure. They hit a very sweet spot, and each song is unique and memorable. This is an essential album that can be played again and again. Xymox forever.
