Edited 4 years ago"2112" was the first Rush album to truly merge the band's progressive sensibilities with hard rock instrumentation, and it masterfully conveys the impression of a futuristic journey to faraway lands. Opening with a twenty-minute epic comprised of seven parts, "2112" sets out to explore different territories in of musical textures and tones, from mainly instrumental to effects-laden affairs. It is, however, Neil Peart's astonishing percussion work that takes centre stage, providing the musical backbone of the album and binding together any disted areas of the overly subdued, complex musical structures. Overall, the opener is a massive sonic undertaking expansive in scale but understated in of pretension and self-expression, and although it never borders on overstaying its welcome, the title track thankfully leads the way for some incredible, less cerebral tracks entirely removed from it. "A age To Bangkok" is the standout track on the album, an indelible composition that dispenses with the band's cerebral tendencies and effectuates the urgency and intensity of classic rock. It may not span twenty minutes or possess as much experimentation as the title track or comprise different styles, but it is equally as superb and well-executed, one of the greatest songs of their career.
I prefer Rush in full-blown classic rock mode, which explains why, even after delving into their vast discography, I return to this album over all others; it satisfies my aural needs and accords with my tastes. It is a masterpiece fully deserving of its sterling reputation.
