Edited 3 years agoThe Flipper's Guitar live album is well worth tracking down. It's mostly culled from TV and live shows from mid-1990 with three later songs (probably very late 1990 or 1991) bookending the record.
The group pick good choices from Three Cheers for Our Side. Boys Fire the Tricot, a song that I don't particularly like on the LP, sounds better here, a lot more natural. Likewise, Samba Parade is faster and Goodbye Our Pastel Badges a good run-through. The Chime Will Ring is a little off, with drums that are far too loud, the guitar is too low in the mix to drive the song.
Camera Talk is a more diverse record than the first, and is highlighted by the strongest songs from that record. Only the delicate Camera Full Of Kisses is missed. I was particularly pleased to hear a live rendition of 3 A.M. Op, which is almost as good at the original. Big Bad Bingo also sounds funkier and more natural in it's live arrangement. Camera! Camera! Camera!, my favourite track by the Flippers is done justice, the group rip through it enthusiastically.
The remainder of the album is a little odd. Winnie-The-Pooh Mugcup Collection, Slide and Love Train were recorded later, each is set to a drum machine with live percussion. Each has more improvisation than their studio recordings. The Winnie-The-Pooh recording is actually better than the album version, the distorted thumping track feels more right in a live setting. Love Train sounds less like a son of Camera! Camera! Camera! and more of a fully fledged baggy rocker.
On Pleasure Bent isn't Flipper's Guitar's best work, but it is full of spirited performances and is an excellent companion to the studio albums. Although more Doctor Head's World Tower would have been welcome.
It usually sells for quite low prices online too. It does not disappoint.
