the original is one of the classiest dance records of all time in my opinion, up there with strings of life. steffan robbers, as always, does not disappoint with his terrace remixes (haunting)

My copy has a sticker on the sleeve from the shop I puchased it in which says: "Words cannot describe the sublime majesty of this record". I think that says it all.

Now this is a total stab in the dark, but I've always had a sneaking suspicion that the strings were sampled from the Boyz N The Hood soundtrack. Could be totally wrong though!

Still sounds brilliant now. Also Terrace mixes quality.

Another all-time-great tune of the early 1990ies. This time accomanied by an EP with 4 remarkable remixes.
The original got it all, strings telling a long story , adventurous bass programming and these mighty drums, that sounded so much thicker and stronger at the eraly days of Techno.
This is a fine example, that a human drummer cannott produce such brilliant, powerful, strange yet always exact rhythm patterns.
The B-Side doesn't pale in comparision, but only the first Track on Side B has the same feel, as "Altered States".
For the Wemixers - well : we have the great pleasure to hear not only one, but two remixes by Stefan Robbers aka Terrace. His versions are shorter and more on point; especially the drums are more on point. The second remix takes a sweet turn on the 'Altered States' melody, the strings taking a fine twist here. Excellent !
Carl Craig's long Version adds his own production style , updating the sound, while fastening the tempo quite noticably. This remix sounds a lot like another Track, only the essential drums are sampled in short time frames to spice up the upbeat and euphoric Tune. The track keeps on rolling. IMPRESSIVE !!! Probably the best mix for the Dancefloor out of this pack. Faster, fresher without losing the stringent musical theme. At the end the drums return with full force and build up a nice last Cadence.....
The final piece is pretty short, starts in a classical mood with no bass or drums merging into a near ambient kinda way for a minute , then slowly bringing back the drums of 'Altered States' + adding strange never heard before synthie-sounds. This mix is really stunning and grabs my attention directly. Some dutch producers did this remix. Wicked!!! Overall a remix package in a class of it's own.

Whilst the original will certainly stand as one of THE House classics of all time, it's the Southside mix by Terrace which does it for me. Breaks wonderfully for the synth melody, then builds gradually with the percussion coming in underneath. The synth line is tweaked superbly later on in the second break.

Hairs standing up all over the place!!

Ron was 15 years old when he made the original. Still sounds fantastic, but the stripped down strings+riff Carl Craig mix has had more mileage since. Fabulous intro - hairs on the back of the neck stuff. The Terrance mix mutes the riff to take it deeper and nastier, inspiring Slam's "Positive Education" in the process. Essential package.
