Edited one year ago(Disclaimer: this review was actually written in 2020)
This one is going to be hard.
Last Saturday, while reviewing my record collection, I came upon Big Big Train, and wrote few lines to go with "The Underfall Yard".
Few minutes later, I learnt in dismay that David Longdon had ed away that very day due to an accident happened on Friday.
One week later, I still can't believe it.
I really think that David was an incredibly talented musician and frontman.
He not only had an uncannily Genesis' classic era Peter Gabriel timbre to his voice, but also had Gabriel's taste for the theatrical and made this inheritance his, renewing through his own features, personality and strengths.
It's really hard to pinpoint only one out of David's many artistic achievements but, if I'm forced to do so, I believe I'd turn my head to 2016's "Folklore".
I believe this is because this album contains two of my favourite songs out of the band's entire songbook: "London Plane" and "The Transit Of Venus Across The Sun".
Incredibly tasteful, both songs showcase the Big Big Train trademark themes (turning British landscapes into music or poetically depicting scientific achievements), while keeping the flame of classic British progressive rock alive and well with engaging, gorgeous and playful instrumental sections that never forget to remark the important thing here, the song, and never giving into today's most common sin among the progressive scene: the pointless instrumental show off.
Just listen to the "The Transit..." final guitar section by Rikard Sjöblom, and try not to feel a lump in your throat while witnessing such majestic beauty made music.
Or try not to laugh of sheer joy while David hits the highest notes at the end of "London Plane".
And it doesn't ends here: "Wassail" and "Telling The Bees" shows once more (i.e. "Make Some Noise") how the band doesn't shy away from writing more "straight forward" songs, effective as clockwork.
I could keep going, but I believe it's better if you make yourself a treat, brew a cuppa, sit down and hit the play button because, as David himself sings here: "Time and tide waits for no man".
Godspeed David, and thank you for the great music.
