Very interesting album- John Robie only worked on 1 song, "My Love Is Alive", and yet, his signature is all over this album. He made Jenny Burton's 1983 album "In Black & White" a masterpiece, and should have done Nona Hendryx's 1983 album "NONA " as well, but it was done by Material. But if you listen to "NONA" you can just hear what John Robie could've done throughtout the album. John Robie was a major driving force behind the 80's Electro sound boom. I wish he could've had control over the entire " I Feel For You" collection of songs.

Edited 20 years agoInterestingly, for all the fanfare this LP (deservedly) gets for being groundbreaking on so many levels, the most interesting thing about (I think anyway) is that the most traditional, downtempo R&B ballad on the album - "Through The Fire" - ended up setting a record on Billboard's top 100 chart by spending an incredible 43 weeks on the chart but never breaking the top 40! It peaked at #42 (on three separate occassions, even) and even went gold but never made it into the top 40. How? Back in the mid eighties, Billboard (and rivals Radio & Records and Cashbox for that matter) was still relying on playlists from radio stations being called in or faxed in and on sales figures that were estimated by record store managers and given to Billboard over the phone. While fairly accurate, the method was lacking in a lot of areas, including timeliness of reporting and calculation of data - something which produced anomales like "Through The Fire." What sustained the record for so long was the continued interest in the song that allowed it to slowly build over time, unlike a albums and singles released today under the Soundscan system, where they can sell 1.4 million copies in one week and then never be on the chart again. Ultimately time did work for Chaka with "Fire" because although it never broke the top 40 in any one week, it ended up being certified gold by the RIAA and ended up being the 23rd biggest hit of that year in the year end top 100.

Edited 20 years agoFantastic 2nd solo album from Chaka. Prooving she was more than capable of staying up to date with the then trend of involving more drum machines/synths into r+b this album still sounds fresh today. Arif Mardens producing qualities play a big part and some of the intro/outro sections where they go wild with the editing are fantastic and sheer testament to the amount of time and skill it would have taken those involved to do those sorts of edits/programming in that period. Samples had only just been introduced so the extensive use of Sampling on this album is historically significant.
