    Sepultura have ARISEN

Sepultura started out as death/thrash metal, eventually mixing-in their Brazilian influences and apex-ing with CHAOS A.D. (1993) and ROOTS (1996). They started apex-ing again with the outstanding NATION (2001) and a string of quality concept albums where their death/thrash/groove metal is excellently crossed with power/prog.

Released in 2017, MACHINE MESSIAH is Sepultura's fourteenth full-length album and the eighth with Derrick Green from Cleveland, Ohio, on vocals. It didn't take long for the band to ARISE to greatness after the departure of original main-man Max Cavalera, but Andreas Kisser & the boys eventually did just that; and albums like NATION and MACHINE MESSIAH are Exhibit A.

What makes this album a winner is that it's not one-dimensional. There are all kinds of songs of varying speeds on the album mixed with various stylings, which keeps the soundscapes interesting. Sure, they're still death/thrash/groove, for the most part, but they're also MORE than that. Derrick, for instance, doesn't stick to his gruff voice, but throws-in several different vocalizations.

The opening title cut is one of my favorites, starting out acoustically and a tad eerie before kickin' in to overdrive. "I am the Enemy" is akin to Bathory's speedy material on, say, 2001's DESTROYER OF WORLDS. "Phantom Self" starts out with some symphonic elements before morphing into a catchy, speedy ditty. "Alethea" also has an interesting intro before going heavy. The instrumental "Iceberg Dances" is a death/prog cut and one of highlights of the album. "Sworn Oath" is one of my favorites, again starting acoustic & eerie before the heavy guitars kick-in; Green switches off the gruff vocals near the end.

"Resistant Parasites" is a cool death/doom hybrid. "Silent Violence" and "Vandal's Nest" are quality numbers with a couple highlights while closer "Cyber God" is another favorite with Green starting out with low vocals and, later, regular singing.

My CD includes two bonus tracks: "Chosen Skin" is as good as anything else on the album and "Ultraseven No Uta" is a sorta joke song, which nicely shows that the band have a humorous side.
