My copy is also terrible. Quiet enough, but very harsh, with lots of sibilance on the vocals, and an overall murky, thin and altogether fatiguing and unpleasant sound.
I thought at the time of release that the CD was badly mixed. Comparing today with the LP, the latter sounds even worse. -
I really like the songs on Accelerate, but there is no version this album that sounds even halfway decent to my ears. Was hoping that the latest (2023) vinyl release would be a marked improvement but it was not at all, at least to my ears. I just feel that it was a very poorly-mixed recording. I guess that this particular 45 RPM version is as "tolerable" as it gets... -

My copy of this sounds absolutely superb. Not a crackly, very dynamic. Can’t be faulted. Give some other comments there must be significant variation. Highly recommended and one of their better late career albums.

Probably the best example of a poorly recorded piece of vinyl if there ever was one. I have a nice system which displays the greatness of a recording or it's flaws and unfortunately it shows off the latter with Accelerate. Weird since they chose to go 45 rpm which benefits vinyl but not this time. Just listen to the title track thru speakers and you'll catch my drift. Otherwise the packaging is solid and even comes with the CD. Sure as a completist pick up this album but you won't be auditorily pleased. And I like REM.

Good overall sound quality, much more dynamic and full than the CD. Too bad for some surface flaws, although they are almost not noticeable (almost... because a couple of them produce clicks).
