I’ve been contemplating the purchase of these Steely Dan UHQR pressings since thy were announced but I’m cheap and was waiting to pick one up second hand or discounted but that never happened, instead my eldest son got me “can’t buy a thrill” for Christmas 🎄.
Awesome packaging as usual from Analogue Productions but for $150 it better be. I was a little disappointed that both LP’s were packaged together in an inner sleeve inside of an outer sleeve while the actual record sleeve itself was unprotected. You would think that some foam protection would have been in order like the MOFI boxes to protect these beauties from delivery handlers? That being said everything was in place. I cleaned disc 1 and dropped the needle and after “”do it again” and into “dirty work” I started hearing popping, needles to say I was not happy. I removed the LP and gave it another cleaning and that seemed to remedy things. Disc 2 was excellent, no pops or clicks. Both LPs were flat and sound excellent. The only question that still remains for myself is are these albums really worth their high asking price of $150?
Cheers. -
Can anyone confirm or deny if this version has the audible issue with the master tape on track 7, “Fire In The Hole” that’s present on other releases cut from this tape.

This is a fantastic pressing. The instrument separation alone is far and away the best I’ve ever heard compared to two other versions I own including an original pressing. That being said, has anybody else noticed pronounced sibilance in a couple of areas on side two? Primarily on Kings and Midnight Cruiser? More specifically on the word “sung” in the line “and though we sung his fame” toward the end of Kings after the solos? It’s ear piercing. Perhaps a couple of other moments here and there but not all the time, by any means. I’ve listened with a MM cart and a Hana SL MC cart. It’s definitely more pronounced on the Hana (logically). I’ve tried different loading and gain settings to no avail. Anyone else notice this? Sounds like something in the original recording to me.

I have recent nostalgia for this album as I only just discovered SD in the past 5 years. It was during a family vacation to Orange County during a cruise down Pacific Coast Highway. And man I fell hard for the mambo-rock opener.
I listened to more. Learned more about them and their commitment to making the best sounding music possible. Their perfectionism. That’s not lost on me. Some of my favorite bands have that same problem. I respect it.
Fast forward to 2022 when Analogue Productions announced they were reissuing all of their albums. I preordered them all. Haven’t been disappointed yet. We’re lucky to have Chad get his hands on all these amazing catalogs. They give them the treatment they deserve.
I won’t bother reviewing the copy itself. Everything everyone had said about it is true. -

Here to echo what basically everyone else has said: absolutely flawless. Pristine sound, such revealing detail and clarity. Instrumental separation is second to none -- I have the first 3 SD albums on UHQR and this has to be the best sounding one so far. Incredible, pick it up while you can.

My 1st UHQR recording and what an experience. The disc is so quiet. Honestly the best sounding recording of anything I own.
Expensive yes but hey you spare no expense for such quality. The 1st of many more to add.
(Rega P8, Apheta 3 cart, Perreaux P350, Perreaux Audiant 80i pre-amp, Goldenear Triton 1s) -
From the moment Donald's vocals kicked in on "Do It Again", I knew I was in for a treat - I was not disappointed. Honestly incredible. I heard new details in virtually every tune. If you can find it for a decent price, I strongly recommend it.

Edited 5 months agoI guess I decided I really wanted this one when I caved to Countdown to Ecstasy UHQR which I thought is excellent. This one perhaps is not quite up to CtE SQ, but it is sure good. Better than my early Canadian press & much better than the Can't Buy a Thrill Ume which I do not like.
(Rega RP6 with Ortofon Black LvB250 cart through McIntosh MA5200 amp & Axiom M60 v2 speakers.) -
Edited one year agoI'm just here to say all the superlatives apply. And my rig is nothing special: solid-state Mac amp, NAD table, Bronze Ortofon. Basic stuff. This thing shimmers. Stunning detail.
